Grant County, West Virginia, has the distinction of being the “Trumpiest” county in the second “Trumpiest” state in America. Eighty-eight percent of Grant County’s voters cast their ballots for Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election, the most of any county in West Virginia. And 69 percent of West Virginia voters cast their ballots for Trump, the highest share of any state except Wyoming.
Unlike much of the rest of West Virginia, Grant County is historically Republican. Its residents will provide insight into how the Republican base is responding to Trump’s presidency as it unfolds. Grant County, which borders Maryland on West Virginia’s eastern panhandle, has also been hit hard by job losses and the opioid epidemic.
