MaComb County, MI

Macomb County, Michigan, a northern suburb of Detroit, is where the term “Reagan Democrats” originated. But it hadn’t voted for a Republican for president since Reagan. Obama won the county with 51 percent of the vote in 2012. Trump won it with 54 percent in 2016, a swing of nearly 50,000 votes. In several visits to Macomb, Trump depicted its residents as victims of international trade. Macomb also has significant black and foreign-born populations and is a top destination of Middle Eastern refugees, including many who voted for Trump.

Trump ‘Made It OK’ To Use Racist Language Again, Black Voters Say

President Trump’s racial rhetoric signaled to his supporters that they too could use racist or racially insensitive language and get away with it, said Darryl Howard. “A lot of people took Trump’s [racially insensitive rhetoric] and internalized it,” he said. “He made it OK for them to say it too.”

Macomb County African-Americans on Trump and Charlottesville

Darryl Howard and George Martin defy easy stereotypes. Howard, a 28-year-old real estate agent, “reluctantly” voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 after voting for Mitt Romney in 2012 and Barack Obama in 2008. Martin, a 28-year-old former sailor, voted for Obama twice, then voted for Donald Trump. Both men are black.
